SubscribeStar creators fear another Patreon-style crackdown after policy update [U: Company responds]

SubscribeStar is now in the spotlight for a recent update to its prohibited content page. The new rules ban fictional content that was previously allowed, including incest, rape, certain types of furry content, and gore. And for many, it feels like déjà vu.

This big change was first highlighted by X user @incontinentcell, whose post currently has over 620,000 views. “SubscribeStar just changed their TOS making them as restrictive as Patreon,” they wrote, pointing out that a new section on compliance with payment processors had been added. As expected, it kicked up a storm amongst the community.

This is not the first time payment processors have squeezed an adult platform. Patreon spent most of 2018 suspending creators and openly blamed pressure from PayPal and Stripe. Then, in mid-2025, Mastercard and Visa pushed Steam and itch.io into pulling hundreds of adult games after a campaign by the Australian group Collective Shout.

SubscribeStar was already showing cracks before this latest update, with the developer behind adult game Degrees of Lewdity saying in September last year that the platform had quietly soft-banned them.

Reacting to the post, @ChibiReviews noted that SubscribeStar has “bent the knee” the same way Patreon did.

SubscribeStar’s recently updated TOS says it operates “in compliance with legal regulations, payment processors, and acquiring banks,” which leaves little room for guessing who pushed for these changes.

Some creators had been running into quiet content blocks for weeks before any policy was formally updated. One Reddit user in early March posted that their upload never went live, with SubscribeStar flagging the phrase “little sister” as implying incest, even though no such rule existed in the TOS at the time.

Adding to the confusion, one of SubscribeStar’s own pages carries a disclaimer stating that “all characters depicted in sexual situations are 18 years of age or older and of the age of consent, even if it looks otherwise.” Yet the updated prohibited content policy says the exact opposite: “for moderation purposes, visual appearance takes precedence over written disclaimers.” In other words, the platform is simultaneously telling creators that fictional age disclaimers are valid and that they are not.

The updated policy also gives SubscribeStar broad discretion to pre-screen and remove content with no prior notice. Creators pointing to DLsite as an alternative are growing in number, with some on X asking if anywhere is left that does not bend to payment processor demands.

SubscribeStar has not issued a public statement on the changes.
