Some Instagram users say messages page appearing blank as older messages aren't loading

Update 11/03/26 – 06:14 pm (IST): Hours later, the issue doesn’t appear to be fully resolved for everyone. Several users in the Reddit thread confirmed the problem also shows up on Instagram’s web version, not just the mobile app. 

On top of messages not loading, some report that messages sent during the outage never reached the other person at all. A few users said things started working again on their end, and at least one noted that reinstalling the app did the trick.

That said, a good chunk of people are still waiting it out. Instagram has not acknowledged the issue publicly.

It seems like Instagram is acting up for some users. Users in different parts of the world are reporting that their DMs page is loading up completely blank. 

Some are stuck seeing a “failed to load earlier messages” error, while others say recent chats just vanished without any clear reason. A Reddit thread picked up over 140 upvotes in under an hour, with dozens of users piling in to confirm they’re seeing the same thing.

A few users in the thread mention that they tried clearing the app’s cache or reinstalling the app, but that didn’t help.

Downdetector has also recorded a sharp spike in Instagram problem reports, with counts climbing past 700 at peak.

The problems go a bit further than just a blank inbox. Some users say they can’t scroll up in existing conversations, chat themes have disappeared, and the search tool inside messages isn’t responding either. People who were mid-conversation when this started are understandably frustrated.

Instagram has not officially commented on the issue yet. But one thing is for certain: this is not a universal problem. Based on reports online, it’s only affecting a limited number of users. In my testing, I was able to send/receive DMs on Instagram as usual. 

This isn’t the first time messaging on Instagram has caused problems recently. Back in October 2025, we reported on a separate bug where the DM button itself went unresponsive, making it impossible to even open the inbox.

For now, there’s no confirmed fix. Since reinstalling the app hasn’t helped most users, waiting for Instagram to sort it out on their end seems like the only realistic option.
