Indian users on X (formerly Twitter) have noticed that pornographic content appears to have been blocked on the platform. If you’re like one of the many who had bookmarked NSFW posts (no judging), then you might be seeing row after row of the same message: “Due to local regulations, this content is restricted on X.”
The restrictions seem to have kicked in earlier today, judging by user reports. X hasn’t put out any official statement explaining the move, but the message itself gives it away — this is a regulatory compliance action, not a global policy change.
This didn’t come out of nowhere. The Indian government, through the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has been applying pressure on X for months. Back in January 2026, MeitY sent X a notice demanding removal of obscene and explicit content, particularly AI-generated material being created through Grok. X responded by blocking around 3,500 pieces of content and deleting 600+ accounts, and assured the government it would comply with local laws. Today’s geo-block looks like the next step in that compliance.
I did a bit of my own digging to confirm what’s going on. Searching for NSFW content or visiting profiles that typically host adult material returns nothing, no posts, no previews, nothing at all. X doesn’t even display a notice saying the content is blocked; it just doesn’t show up. But the moment I switched on a VPN, everything came back. That confirms this is a region-specific block, not a platform-wide takedown.
When someone asked Grok directly, the AI bot responded, stating that X has geo-blocked consensual adult content in India to comply with government regulations on obscene material. Grok also clarified that X’s global policy, which has allowed properly labeled adult content since May 2024, hasn’t changed. After checking the page, I can confirm that it is indeed the case. India is simply the exception now.
Reactions on the platform are mixed, as you’d expect. User @barandbroken drew a sharp comparison to Tumblr’s infamous NSFW ban: “Tumblr really taught us nothing because the second they banned NSFW the whole site flatlined, and now Twitter has pulled the same stunt in India? This is not policy, this is self sabotage.” Meanwhile, plenty of users have been sharing screenshots of their bookmarks now filled wall-to-wall with the “restricted” notice.
Others like @LetsXOtt praised the decision, posting: “Elon Musk banned 18+ videos in India. Respect @elonmusk,” pulling in over 1,600 likes.
This fits a broader pattern of India tightening its grip on adult content online. The government has blocked multiple OTT platforms for streaming pornographic material under Section 69A of the IT Act, and the earlier Grok crackdown was just the most recent escalation before this.
At the moment, there’s no official statement from X or the Government of India regarding the crackdown on obscene content on the platform. We’ll keep an eye out for any further details and will update the article accordingly.
