Microsoft’s official Copilot Discord server had a rough weekend. What started as a keyword filter quietly blocking the word “Microslop” turned into a full-blown moderation mess, with chat history hidden and the server locked down for a stretch.
“Microslop” is a mix of “Microsoft” and “slop” — slop being internet slang for bad AI output. Users on the Copilot Discord found out their messages with the word were getting blocked, with a notice saying “Your message contain phrase that is inappropriate.”
So they did what anyone would do: they kept posting it, just in different ways. Variations started popping up across the server, and moderators reportedly ended up locking it down.
Windows Latest first reported that the Copilot Discord’s #general channel had its message history hidden and posting disabled following the wave of “Microslop” posts.
The story was picked up and amplified by Pirat_Nation on X, pulling in over 185K views. The situation drew a fair bit of ridicule online, given that the server was never particularly active to begin with.
As of this writing, the #general channel and others are back and running. New messages are coming in, and I can see users posting normally today. But there are no messages from February 28 or March 1 visible at all. That two-day stretch, when the “Microslop” situation was at its peak, is just gone from view. Whether those messages were deleted or history was simply disabled during the lockdown isn’t clear yet.
The whole situation does raise questions about how Microsoft handles criticism on its own community platforms. Blocking a slang term is one thing. Locking down the server and wiping visible history in response to users bypassing a word filter is another, and it’s the kind of move that tends to make things worse, not better.
As one X user put it: “Trying to fix a bad rep by blocking people. Who is making these decisions?”
For now, Copilot Discord is open again. But those two days of conversation are nowhere to be seen.
