MangaDex staff are finally talking about why titles have been vanishing from the platform. After days of speculation and angry users flooding the forums, administrators dropped a series of posts in a discussion thread that’s been running hot since the weekend.

The short version? They’re enforcing an existing rule, not exactly rewriting the playbook. Staff member EtherealNeko said the removals are tied to clause 3.1.1 in MangaDex’s content policy, which covers underage characters appearing in sexual content. Specifically, they’re going after titles where characters “are clearly very young in appearance” or the story itself confirms they’re under 18.

Another staffer, Xnot, said the legal team told them to act but wouldn’t say who pushed for it. “Our legal department told us to take action and we took it. That is the extent of what I can or want to say regarding that.”

As expected, users kept pressing for details about outside pressure, but staff shut that down fast.

Interestingly, EtherealNeko said only flagged titles are being reviewed right now. “Titles being removed are those we have been made aware of through a legal nexus as ‘considered the distribution of illegal material.'” And followed up with, “Nothing else is being examined at this time.”

This isn’t MangaDex’s first rodeo with takedowns. Last May, they nuked over 700 series after getting hit with a massive DMCA campaign from big publishers like Kakao, Square Enix, and Kodansha. That was about copyright. This time it’s about what kind of content they’ll host at all.

DMCA strikes are legal but pretty straightforward. Content policy enforcement is a bit murkier, especially when staff won’t say exactly where the line is. EtherealNeko mentioned they’re trying to figure out a way to keep title pages and metadata up even after pulling content, but that’s still being worked out.

People are reacting exactly how you’d expect. Some uploaders want clearer rules so they don’t get blindsided. Others think MangaDex is caving to pressure and planning to “go legit.” Screenshots from the forum posts went viral on X and across Reddit, with users split between supporting the move and looking for alternative sites.

Staff said they’ll try to warn uploaders before removing stuff going forward, but there’s no formal appeals process and no detailed guidelines on what crosses the line. For now, it’s wait and see.
