A new phishing scam is spreading through Discord, and it looks convincing enough to fool even careful users. The fake messages appear as forwarded DMs with a “sensitive content” warning and a button that says “Verify age group.” Click it, and you could allegedly hand over your entire account to scammers.
The scam mimics Discord’s real age verification prompts almost perfectly. When you receive the message, it shows up as a forwarded note claiming to contain sensitive content that requires age verification to view. That button takes you to a phishing site designed to steal your login credentials or session tokens.
The issue was first highlighted on X by Sonea, warning that scammers are now exploiting the platform’s recent push for age verification. The post quickly gained traction, racking up over 350,000 views as more users shared similar experiences.
This becomes a real big problem because Discord announced teen-by-default settings globally earlier this month, which restrict access to certain content until users prove they’re adults. The platform started experimenting with age verification in the UK and Australia back in April 2025, asking users to either scan their face or upload a government ID.
One user on X pointed out that Discord’s new update essentially gave scammers a blueprint for hacking accounts. Another raised concerns about children being forced to verify their age for hackers, who could then use stolen photos and personal data for far worse purposes.
This isn’t Discord’s first brush with security problems related to age verification. Last October, the platform confirmed that 70,000 government IDs were exposed when hackers breached a third-party customer service provider called 5CA. Selfies of people holding their ID documents ended up posted online.
More recently, the community lashed out at Discord for partnering with Persona for age verification. Not much after the backlash, the company ended this “experiment” and now only uses k-ID. The controversy has pushed many users to look for Discord alternatives and cancel their Nitro subscriptions.
If you get a message asking you to verify your age on Discord, don’t click anything. Real age verification happens through Discord’s settings menu, not through random forwarded messages in your inbox. When in doubt, navigate to the settings yourself instead of clicking links sent to you.
