After weeks of speculation regarding the disappearance of the popular feature, a community moderator suggests the change is not a bug.

Earlier this month, users of Google’s Circle to Search feature began noticing a frustrating change: the dedicated “Share” button, which allowed for quick dissemination of selected content, had vanished. The issue was initially brought to light by Android Authority, who reported on the missing UI element but noted that it was “unclear if this is a bug or an intentional change.”

At the time of their reporting, they reached out to Google for clarification but had yet to receive an official response.

However, new information surfacing from the community suggests this may be a permanent change.

According to a recent interaction in the Google community forum, the removal of the Share button is not an error. Part of the message, which is a follow-up to a previous promise by a Silver Product Expert to escalate the matter, reads:

"I just got the feedback from Google. The engineering team has confirmed that this is working as intended.

If accurate, this confirms that Google deliberately removed the direct sharing functionality from the Circle to Search overlay, forcing users to likely save the image or take a screenshot manually before sharing it.

Important context on the source

While this update provides the clarity many were seeking, it is important to view the source with a degree of caution. The info is from a conversation with a “Silver Product Expert”.

For those unfamiliar with Google’s support ecosystem, Product Experts are generally community volunteers, not direct employees of Google. While they often have access to escalation channels and can communicate with Google’s engineering teams, as claimed in the message, their statements are not equivalent to an official press release or a direct statement from a Google employee.

That said, Product Experts are frequently the conduit through which bug reports are confirmed or denied by the development team, lending credibility to the claim that the engineering team has indeed reviewed the issue.

The message notes that while the current behavior is “working as intended,” the team will “continue to monitor the forum for feedback.” This suggests that while the decision has been made, significant user backlash could potentially prompt a reversal.

For now, Circle to Search users missing the button may have to adjust their workflows, as the quick-share functionality appears to have been deprecated by design.
