Google is closing out the Android 16 QPR3 beta cycle with a fresh Beta 2.1 update, while simultaneously setting the stage for the Android 17 Beta program, which is now officially “around the corner.” The timing makes this release less about new features and more about stabilizing the platform before the next major beta wave begins.

Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1: what’s new (and what’s not)

Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1 is now rolling out under build numbers CP11.251209.009.A1 and CP11.251209.009, replacing the previous .007.A1 build. Google’s official release notes don’t spell out specific bug fixes, which strongly suggests this is a maintenance-focused update aimed at stability and behind-the-scenes fixes rather than visible changes.

Despite that, the OTA size hints at more than just a minor tweak. The update weighs in at around 123 MB on the Pixel 9a and 98.39 MB on the Pixel 10, making it a fairly chunky beta patch.

This update continues to ship with the January 2026 security patch, though some older devices, including the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series, are still listed as being on a December 2025 security patch. Google Play services version 25.47.33 is also included.

Supported Pixel devices

Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1 is available for essentially every supported Pixel device, including:

  • Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a
  • Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a
  • Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold
  • Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a
  • Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold, 9a
  • Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold
Android-1

If your Pixel was already enrolled in the Android 16 QPR3 Beta program and you haven’t opted out, the update should arrive automatically.

Factory images, OTAs, and a familiar omission

Google has published factory images, OTA images, and GSI builds for QPR3 Beta 2.1, giving developers and enthusiasts multiple installation options. However, there’s a familiar footnote here: OTA images for the Pixel 10 series are once again missing, even though those devices are receiving the update over-the-air.

That inconsistency has popped up more than once this cycle and continues to be a mild frustration for users who prefer manual OTA installs.

Android 17 Beta 1 is next, and it’s coming fast

Alongside the QPR3 Beta 2.1 rollout, Google’s Android Beta Team has confirmed that Android 17 Beta 1 will begin very soon. The upcoming beta is built directly on top of the Android 16 QPR platform release and will include the latest bug fixes, stability improvements, and performance enhancements.

In a post to the community, the Android Beta Team stated:

"With the release of our final Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1 patch, we are looking forward to our next Beta program cycle that covers our Android 17 Platform Release (26Q2)... Android 17 Beta 1 will kick soon."

If you’re currently enrolled in the beta program and do nothing, your device will automatically update to Android 17 Beta 1 once it becomes available.

Want stable Android 16 QPR3 instead? Read carefully

Google also used the announcement to clarify how users can safely exit the beta program without wiping their data, which is always a point of confusion.

To receive the final stable Android 16 QPR3 release:

  • You must opt out of the Beta Program
  • When prompted, do not install the “Downgrade” OTA
  • Ignore that downgrade notification and wait for the official stable Android 16 QPR3 OTA (build series CP1A), which is expected soon

As long as you don’t apply the downgrade OTA, opting out will not wipe your data.

However, there are some important caveats:

  • If you install Android 17 Beta 1 and then opt out, your device will be wiped
  • If you opt out after installing a QPR3 beta update and apply the downgrade OTA, a wipe is unavoidable
  • The next guaranteed no-wipe exit window after Android 17 Beta 1 arrives will be towards the end of the Android 17 beta cycle in June 2026

Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1 feels like Google tightening bolts before turning the page. The lack of documented fixes, the OTA size, and the timing all point to a cleanup release meant to leave the QPR branch in a good state before Android 17 testing begins in earnest.

For Pixel users enrolled in the beta program, the next few days are a decision point: stick around and ride into Android 17 Beta 1, or opt out carefully and lock in the stable Android 16 QPR3 release without losing data.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem.
