LineageOS has officially rolled out LineageOS 23.2, its latest stable release based on Android 16 QPR2, bringing a refreshed design, platform changes, and long-term cadence adjustments to supported devices. The update promotes 146 devices in total, one more than the previous 23.0 cycle, and includes Google Pixel phones from the Pixel 4 through the Pixel 9 series, as well as the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet.

For users already running official LineageOS 23.0 builds on eligible devices, the transition should be straightforward. LineageOS confirms that these devices will receive LineageOS 23.2 as an over-the-air (OTA) update once it becomes available, without requiring a data wipe unless a device’s wiki page explicitly states otherwise.

This release also marks a structural shift in how LineageOS versions will roll out going forward. Google has recently moved AOSP feature drops from a quarterly to a biannual schedule, with major updates landing every six months. In response, LineageOS will now follow the same six-month cadence for its point releases. Monthly Android Security Bulletins will still be merged and distributed across all supported branches.

What’s new in LineageOS 23.2

One of the most noticeable changes in LineageOS 23.2 is the arrival of Google’s Material 3 Expressive design language, which was notably absent in LineageOS 23.0. The update introduces more expressive colors, refined animations, and emotive UI elements across the system. It also folds in all the additional features and refinements Google introduced with Android 16 QPR1 and QPR2. LineageOS now joins the likes of GrapheneOS in delivering the promise of Material 3 Expressive to custom ROM users.

Quick Settings has received a visual refresh as well, featuring redesigned, fully customizable tiles that aim to be both cleaner and more flexible. LineageOS 23.2 also expands its dark theme support and improves file utilities tied to private spaces, rounding out the system-level enhancements.

App updates and redesigns

LineageOS is gradually updating its core apps to match the new Material 3 Expressive look. Twelve (the default music app) and ExactCalculator have already received visual overhauls in this release, with DeskClock confirmed to be next in line. The broader goal, according to the team, is to bring the entire default app suite in line with Google’s latest design standards.

The LineageOS Updater app is also set for a major redesign. While the revamped UI didn’t make it in time for the initial 23.2 launch, it’s expected to arrive soon with improved update management, smoother animations, and multiple bug fixes.

Behind the scenes changes

LineageOS 23.2 also introduces new development tools to simplify overlay management, certificate updates, and SELinux policy extraction for maintainers and developers. On the leadership front, longtime contributor Rashed has stepped away after more than a decade with CyanogenMod and LineageOS, while Nolen Johnson has been voted in as the project’s ninth director.

LineageOS says the new 23.2 branch is ready for widespread adoption, with more devices expected to join as they meet official requirements.
