GitHub Copilot down for many as users report Language model unavailable errors

GitHub Copilot is down for developers across the board, with users running into “Language model unavailable” errors when trying to use the AI coding assistant.

GitHub confirmed the issue on its status page about 20 minutes after users started reporting problems. “We are investigating an issue that is causing failures in all Copilot requests,” the company posted at 9:45 UTC. 

The company later identified what appears to be a configuration issue behind the outage. At 10:02 UTC, GitHub posted that they’d rolled back the problematic change and were “starting to see signs of recovery.” However, some users are still reporting issues despite the update, suggesting the fix hasn’t fully propagated across all systems yet.

On Reddit’s r/vscode forum, one developer asked if anyone else was seeing the error, and responses poured in almost immediately. “Same issue here,” wrote one user. Another confirmed, “Yes.” The thread has become a quick check-in spot for developers wondering if the problem was on their end or GitHub’s.

Complaints are also flooding X. “gaawd what am i gonna deliver my manager now,” one user joked. Another told “vibe coders” to take a break while the service was down. 

Some users reported that Copilot was trying to default to ChatGPT 4.1 but showing “model busy” messages instead. Others said only “Auto” mode appeared in their model list.

GitHub hasn’t provided a timeline for when full service will be restored, but the company is actively investigating the issue.
