Update 10/01/26 – 04:50 pm (IST): Anthropic employee Thariq from the Claude Code team posted a detailed thread explaining that the restrictions target third-party harnesses spoofing the official client, which violate ToS by creating unusual traffic patterns without telemetry — complicating debugging, rate limits, and support.

He reiterated that the API is the supported integration method, invited third-party tool maintainers to DM for discussions, noted plans to clarify the policy on the OAuth screen, and confirmed all known bans triggered by this issue have been lifted.

Developer backlash continues, with some canceling subscriptions and migrating workflows. In contrast, OpenCode rapidly released v1.1.11, enabling direct use of ChatGPT Plus/Pro plans via Codex, following collaboration with OpenAI, which publicly endorsed broader ecosystem support for third-party tools. Anthropic has announced no reversal of the restrictions.

Original article published on January 9, 2026, follows:

A lot of people who pay for Claude subscriptions are running into issues in the past few hours. Their usual third-party apps, like OpenCode and Clawdbot, just stopped connecting properly.

Developer Theo broke the news earlier today, noting that Anthropic is “cracking down on utilizing Claude subs in 3rd party apps.” The tweet quickly gained traction, racking up over 94,000 views as frustrated developers weighed in.

Another user, Jesse Hanley, posted “RIP @AnthropicAI in @opencode” and later added that he’d cancel his Claude subscription if the issue isn’t resolved quickly.

Developer Ken Wheeler commented, “i literally just got that sh*t tuned,” expressing frustration at having just finished setting up his workflow. Another post from Rhys Sullivan showed the crackdown even affected his father’s “vibe coding session,” with his dad unable to ask Claude for help because, well, Claude wasn’t working.

Mark Jaquith raised a good point in the replies, asking, “Why would they do this? They get their $100 or $200 a month and their usage limits are the same regardless of what client you’re using.” It’s a fair question. Subscribers are still paying the same monthly fee and hitting the same usage caps, so why anger paying customers?

Some users are already working on fixes. Developer Devin Riegle posted that he put up a patch that “should get us working for a while,” with Jesse Hanley quickly responding that he’s pulling the update.

As of now, Anthropic hasn’t said a word publicly about the changes. No announcements on their site or responses on X. Whether Anthropic reverses course or doubles down on restricting unofficial API usage remains to be seen.

Either way, we’ll keep an eye out for any fruther developments and will post an update if and when there’s something to share.
