It seems some iPhone users are running into a frustrating problem with Instagram. After installing the latest app update, several people found themselves unable to open Instagram at all. The app crashes immediately on launch, making it completely unusable.
A user on the r/Instagram subreddit flagged the issue earlier today, noting that they and their friends with iPhone X devices started experiencing crashes right after updating the app.
One person with an iPhone 8 Plus mentioned updating Instagram alongside other apps, and while everything else worked fine, Instagram kept closing within a second of opening it.
I noticed that most reports seem to be coming from users on older iOS builds. Several commenters specifically mentioned running iOS 16.7.12 on devices like the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus. However, other reports that I’ve seen don’t mention the device or platform details.
The problem isn’t isolated to Reddit either. Over on X, users have been tagging Instagram’s official account, asking for help. One person tweeted they can’t open the app on their iPhone, while another mentioned in Spanish that the app updated and now refuses to launch.
One commenter pointed out something worth noting: they deleted and reinstalled Instagram to clear the cache, thinking that might help. Instead, it made things worse because now the app won’t work at all. So if you’re experiencing this issue, you might want to hold off on reinstalling for now.
In my brief testing with Instagram version 411.0.0 on an iPhone 16 running on the latest iOS 26 beta, I noticed no such problems. The app worked just fine.
Meanwhile, I’d suggest using Instagram through a web browser like Safari on your phone. Just yesterday, I highlighted complaints about Google’s Voice app breaking for users on iOS 18 builds, so it seems users with older iPhones can’t catch a break.
We’ll keep an eye out for any further developments and will post an update if there’s something to share.
