YouTube’s AI moderation system just went rogue on gaming creators. A wave of Minecraft and Roblox channels lost their monetization overnight, and nobody seems to know why.
Popular Roblox creator KreekCraft was among the first to sound the alarm, tagging YouTube CEO Neal Mohan directly on X. “YouTube’s AI Moderation has started demonetizing a lot of Roblox and Minecraft channels,” he wrote. The issue hit everyone from massive channels to smaller creators in the space.
TeamYouTube responded shortly after, saying they’re looking into it. But for creators who woke up to find their revenue stream completely shut off, that’s not exactly reassuring.
The problem appears to be YouTube’s automated systems flagging channels for “harmful content involving minors.” Which is wild considering we’re talking about standard Minecraft gameplay and Roblox videos. These aren’t controversial channels. They’re the kind of family-friendly gaming content that’s been YouTube’s bread and butter for years.
What’s making this worse is the appeals process seems broken. Creators are submitting appeals and getting instant automated rejections. That tracks with YouTube’s recent admission that it’s using AI to handle creator appeals and customer support. When AI is both flagging content and reviewing appeals, there’s no human in the loop to catch obvious mistakes.
These aren’t just hobbyist channels. Many employ entire teams. As one creator noted, we’re talking about businesses that support multiple families, not solo operations recording in their bedroom. Here’s a screenshot of just a few out of the dozens of reports that popped up within the last few hours on X.
YouTube’s been leaning harder on AI moderation because there’s just too much content for humans to review everything. But when the system misfires this badly, it shows how precarious creator revenue really is.
The platform needs to sort this out fast. Gaming content drives massive viewership on YouTube, and Minecraft and Roblox communities are huge parts of that. Letting an automated system nuke established creators without warning isn’t just bad for those channels. It makes every creator wonder if they’re next.
We’ll keep an eye out for any further developments and will update the article accordingly.
