Facebook users can’t seem to peek at who shared their posts anymore. That’s the widespread gripe bubbling up across Facebook groups and timelines this week. Tap the share count on your post — a number that’s supposed to open a handy “People who shared this” list — and it now either does nothing or pops up the share composer instead.

For over a decade, the “share” metric has been a pillar of the Facebook experience. You posted a photo, watched the counter tick up, and clicked that number to see if it was your best friend or a random bot that amplified your voice. It was a simple, functional loop that rewarded engagement with transparency.

Now, it’s gone for many, sparking posts like Matt Potter’s giveaway plea: “Facebook’s new update no longer lets me see who shared my post — if you’ve already shared it, please LIKE this post so I’ll know.”

Lachelle A. Edwards vented similarly: “Dear Facebook, I am toooo nosey for this new update. I need to see who is sharing the posts.” A post in the “Keeping It Real” group almost highlighted the frustration, with April Ramseur saying, “I hate this new update Facebook did. Why cant I see who shares my posts?!”

Reddit’s r/facebook has threads dating back to mid-November, like one asking, “Is there any way of seeing who has shared your post, since the new update?” However, from what we’re seeing, complaints spiked in the past few days.

We’d be very surprised if this is a permanent “feature” intended to improve privacy, mostly because it breaks the fundamental social contract of the platform. If someone shares my public post, I should know who they are — or at least be told their privacy settings hide them.

Meta’s mum as usual, with no help center update or newsroom post explaining it. Privacy hawks might cheer less visibility, but without word from Meta, it feels more like a glitch than a feature.

We’ll just have to wait for an official word to know what’s going on.
