Elon Musk's Grok now supports text-to-video generation

Elon Musk’s xAI chatbot just got a major creative boost. Grok now supports text-to-video generation, letting users create short video clips directly from text prompts without needing to start with an image first.

That limitation was one of the reasons why many AI enthusiasts preferred other AI video generation platforms. But now, the wait for text-to-video is finally over.

Lara Lu, the developer behind Grok’s Android app, confirmed the feature rolled out fully on the Android platform. She noted that the text-to-video capability should unlock more creative possibilities since users can skip the intermediate step of generating an image before making a video. The toggle for switching between image and video generation sits right in the input bar, making it easy to pick which format you want.

The feature is currently available on both the web version and Android, which users can test right now. What’s surprising here is that iOS hasn’t received this update yet, breaking the usual pattern where Apple’s platform gets features first or simultaneously with Android. It’s a rare instance where Android users are ahead of their iPhone counterparts.

This text-to-video addition builds on other improvements that are coming to the Grok app, which include video download fixes, an overhauled media details screen, and a ‘Trending Now’ section. The rapid pace of updates shows xAI is actively pushing to make Grok more competitive with other AI assistants that have similar multimedia generation capabilities.

The timing makes sense given how quickly generative AI tools are evolving. OpenAI’s Sora and Google’s Veo have been expanding their video capabilities, and Grok needed to keep up. Text-to-video generation represents a logical next step after image generation became standard across major AI platforms.

For now, users can experiment with creating short video clips using simple text descriptions. The quality and capabilities will likely improve as xAI refines the underlying models, but having the feature available marks an important milestone for Grok’s development. Whether iOS users will have to wait weeks or just days for the same functionality remains unclear.
