Facebook Messenger has been giving users a serious headache over the past couple of days. People on Android (and a handful on iOS) devices are finding themselves completely locked out of the app, with crashes happening the moment they try to open it. What’s worse? The usual fixes aren’t working.
Reports started flooding in about two days ago when users noticed the app would flash briefly on screen before immediately crashing back to the home screen.
One frustrated user mentioned they’ve been dealing with this for over 16 hours straight, unable to send messages without switching to their laptop.
The problem spans a wide range of devices too. Samsung Galaxy users on the S23, S24, and S25 models are reporting identical issues. Google Pixel owners aren’t faring any better, with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 10 Pro both affected. OnePlus, Xiaomi, and even Asus ROG Phone users have chimed in with the same complaints.
The standard troubleshooting steps have proven pretty useless here. Users have tried clearing cache, wiping app data, force stopping, and even completely uninstalling and reinstalling Messenger. Nothing seems to stick.
There’s a silver lining for some users, though. A few people discovered they were enrolled in the Messenger beta program without realizing it. After leaving the beta through the Google Play Store or App Store and reinstalling the regular version, their apps started working again.
This suggests the latest beta update might be the culprit behind the widespread crashes. However, this fix hasn’t worked for everyone, leaving many still stranded.
One Reddit user also found success by manually downloading an older version of the app (install APK files at your own risk) and disabling auto-updates, though this comes with its own security risks. There are no workarounds for the iOS app at the moment.
Meta hasn’t released an official statement about the issue yet, and outage tracking sites haven’t flagged any major problems on their end.
That said, we’ll post an update if and when there are any further developments.
