Roblox just dropped what might be its biggest username purge ever, and the criteria was simple: if you had “69” anywhere in your name, you were getting reset. No warning, no grace period, just a forced change to a placeholder username and a notification explaining your name broke the rules.

Players started noticing the mass resets a couple of days ago. User Protons posted on r/RobloxHelp showing their moderation warning for “LXIX_Arlz69.” The moderator note was direct: “Your username or display name was found to be inappropriate and has been changed to a placeholder.” Thing is, they’d been using that username for ages without any problems. Why now?

The answer became clear pretty fast when other players chimed in. “I got the exact same thing but at 6:50 am and I also have 69 in my username so there we know the reason,” False-Ad2856 commented on the same thread. GalletiUwU had their “iBlitz69” username reset too. Everyone affected had one thing in common.

Over on X, the complaints are also still rolling in. “Roblox just reset my 9 year old username because it had ’69’ in it, oh well it was fun while it lasted,” kzed_00 posted. Nine years. That’s not some throwaway account — that’s close to a decade of game history, friends, and purchases tied to one identity.

Ven had it even worse: “@Roblox why is my username and account just now getting banned after ive had this account for 11 years lol. all because i made a username when i was little that had the numbers 69 in it and didnt think anything of it. crazy dude.”

At least they weren’t actually banned from playing. Roblox just forcibly renamed everyone to generic placeholders and offered a free username change. But even that caused problems for some users. 69Valen69 couldn’t access the settings page to pick a new name, getting stuck in a loop where the system told them to change it but wouldn’t let them through. Most of these issues seem fixed now, but it was a messy rollout.

Interestingly, one user on X, Zenha, speculated that this moderation wave might have affected millions of accounts.

That sounds dramatic, but think about how many people have used “69” in a username over the years. Individuals born in 1969. People who picked it because it’s a funny number. Random username generators. Sports jersey numbers. The list goes on.

Naturally, not everyone’s taking this quietly. “I almost got banned from Roblox for having 69 in my name, but they refuse to ban predators,” mendzz posted. It’s a fair point. Roblox has dealt with legitimate safety issues on the platform, so seeing resources go toward nuking usernames with a number in them feels backwards.

This comes on the heels of Roblox’s facial recognition system misfiring badly, incorrectly sorting adults into under-13 age groups and putting minors in 18+ categories. Between broken age verification and mass username resets, Roblox’s automated systems aren’t exactly inspiring confidence right now.

Some people did try appealing. Forsaken-Ad3505 said they got their exact username back, 69 included, after submitting an appeal. But hammerthebest noted that “69 isn’t allowed on roblox so there’s no point of appealing it.” The inconsistency here is weird. Either the rule is enforced or it isn’t.

The one upside is that username changes are normally 1,000 Robux (about $10), so at least affected players get a free reset. Protons mentioned “it let me change my name for free (I wanted to change it aswell)” so there’s no extra charge to fix this. Small consolation when you didn’t ask for the change in the first place.

That said, Roblox has yet to make a public statement regarding the account resets due to ’69’ being present in the username. Was your username also reset? Let us know in the comments below.
