Update 27/10/25 – 04:21 pm (IST): The official known issues tracker for Helldivers 2 does mention “Crashes, performance, and connectivity problems are ongoing issues that are always being worked on and are not listed here.” However, since there’s no specific mention of any particular issue causing the game to crash, it’s unclear if we’ll see a proper fix for the issue any time soon.

Meanwhile, some players fixed post-update launch crashes by deleting the Proton directory on Linux or the AppData folder on Windows, which resets settings but restores game functionality. Check out the discussion on this thread for more details.

Original article published on October 24, 2025, follows:

Arrowhead Game Studios just dropped the 4.1.0 update for Helldivers 2, calling it “Into the Unjust.” The patch was supposed to finally fix the stability problems that have been bugging players since day one.

The patch notes looked impressive too, with over 200 fixes covering everything from weapon balance to enemy tweaks. Performance improvements were front and center, and the notes also mentioned that the devs have fixed several issues that were causing the game to crash in various situations.

Since the full notes are too long to add here, I’ve instead added the section highlighting fixes for crashes:

Crashes

  • Fixed a rare crash occurring when fighting Illuminates
  • Fixed a crash when hotjoining and readying up before other hotjoiners
  • Fixed a crash occurring when a player would re-join multiple times
  • Fixed a rare crash caused by Eagle-1
  • Fixed a rare bug where the Eagle-1 would never be removed from the game session and eventually cause crashes
  • Fixed rare crash bug that could happen when spawning in groups of enemies
  • Fixed crash affecting Helldivers trying to lean out from a vehicle
  • Fixed a crash that could happen when scrolling through the weapon customization menu
  • Fixed a crash that could happen during game shutdown

After reading the notes, players assumed they’d have smooth gameplay going forward. Turns out, that’s not quite how things went down.

Almost immediately after the update went live, players started reporting problems. And not just minor hiccups either. We’re talking about full-on crashes that are apparently worse than before the patch. PC players are dealing with random hard crashes that make it nearly impossible to finish a session. One person said they’d never experienced crashes until this update, and now they can’t get through a single mission. The usual fixes like verifying game files or clearing shader caches? They’re barely helping.

The launch crashes are particularly nasty. Some players can’t even get the game to boot without hitting a black screen and immediate crash. Error logs point to corrupted system files, but nobody’s quite sure what’s causing it. Mods seem to be part of the problem, with at least one player stating that removing mods fixed the issue. But in the comments, another player noted the game kept crashing, even without mods.

Xbox isn’t getting off easy either. Players are reporting freezes where the screen locks up but the audio keeps playing before the whole thing crashes. Gacrux seems to be a particular problem spot. Some people think it’s tied to certain biomes or particle effects, but whatever the cause, the patch definitely didn’t deliver the stability it promised.

The community’s frustration is spilling over everywhere you look. People with top-tier gaming rigs are still crashing and wondering if it’s just them. Others have spent hours troubleshooting only to find they still can’t launch the game. Launch crashes have become so common that players are trading workarounds like removing mods or lowering graphics settings. Even posts with nothing but “Crashes” in the title are popping up in the past few hours. Check out this video for reference that shows a weird bug screwing up gameplay, and then causing it to crash:

Sure, some players aren’t having any issues at all. Some even say things are running better. But if you look at the forums and community threads, it’s clear this patch created more problems than it solved for a lot of people.

Arrowhead hasn’t yet acknowledged these fresh complaints about the game crashing on PC and Xbox, so it’s unclear if we’ll see a proper fix land anytime soon.

In the meantime, drop a comment below to let us know how the game is fairing for your following the 4.1.0 update.
