If you woke up today to someone who definitely shouldn’t have seen your Instagram note responding to it, you’re not alone. What started as a few confused posts on Reddit has snowballed into a full-blown privacy nightmare for Instagram users who thought their Close Friends feature actually meant “close friends.”
Users across the platform are reporting that notes specifically set to Close Friends-only visibility are showing up for followers who aren’t on that list. And we’re not talking about a handful of cases. Multiple Reddit threads popped up within hours of each other, all describing the same gut-wrenching moment when the wrong person interacted with their supposedly private thoughts. Even posts on X highlighted the confusion.
One user recounted what they called an “EXTREMELY incriminating” situation where they posted a Close Friends note about someone they have a crush on. That exact person, who wasn’t on their Close Friends list, replied asking if the note was about them. “I can’t fathom my own misfortune. I’m actually in hell,” they wrote.
Another user mentioned they only have their girlfriend on their Close Friends list and got caught off guard when someone else liked their note.
The bug doesn’t seem to be picking favorites. Some users report just one person outside their list seeing the note, while others say multiple followers who shouldn’t have access are liking and replying.
One person tested it with an alternate account and noted that it happened when the other person had you in their Close Friends list. This could explain why people report that their notes were only visible to a select few followers. The timing suggests this started happening around the same time for everyone, pointing to a platform-wide glitch rather than individual account issues.
Instagram hasn’t officially commented on the bug yet, though some users reported that after logging out and back in, things appeared to return to normal. But for those who already got exposed? The damage is done. As one user put it, this bug “could destroy my life if I didn’t react sooner.”
That said, when a feature designed specifically to limit who sees your content fails this spectacularly, it’s more than just embarrassing. It’s a breach of trust. We’ll have to wait and see if Instagram addresses the glitch publicly or just throws it under the rug, like it did with the vanishing posts bug from profiles.
