WhatsApp users are dealing with a weird notification that pops up across their chats, warning them that their contacts’ phone numbers are “connected to a new WhatsApp account.” The strange part? Nobody actually switched accounts.

The issue started cropping up around the end of September, when several users on the Android beta program noticed something was off after an update. What began as a minor annoyance quickly turned into a full-blown nightmare for many. One user on Reddit woke up to find the message appearing every time they opened a chat, saying they were too scared to click on it.

Another person noted that whenever this message appeared, sending a message to that contact created a new conversation while the previous chat history vanished.

Multiple reports on Reddit show users frantically trying to understand what’s happening, with some clarifying they hadn’t logged into any new devices. The problem isn’t limited to beta testers either. Even those who left the beta program, backed up their data, factory reset their phones, and downloaded WhatsApp from a different Google account are still facing the issue.

This comes right after WhatsApp dealt with chats turning blank and message history disappearing and a black shadow appearing over image previews on Android.

Reports on X show users tagging WhatsApp and Meta, asking if it’s a bug or a server problem. Another user mentioned that while their chats came back, every single conversation now displays the “connected to a new account” message, leading to blank chats when clicked.

It’s unclear what might be causing the problem, but your best bet is to wait for an official fix to arrive.

We’ll keep an eye out for any further developments and will update the article if there’s something to share.
