Charging your shiny new iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max? You might want to check if it’s making weird noises.
Users are complaining about a strange buzzing or hissing sound coming from the speakers while their phones charge. It started with one Reddit post about two weeks ago, but now dozens of people are saying they hear it too. The sound is faint but gets pretty obvious in quiet rooms, especially near the bottom speaker.
Here’s the thing: it’s not just a few unlucky people with defective units. Multiple users got replacements from Apple and the new phones do the exact same thing. User z3r0se7en swapped their device and still heard the static. MrWolfery had an identical experience. When replacements have the same problem, that’s usually a sign something bigger is going on.
The noise gets worse under certain conditions. Scroll through TikTok or Instagram with the volume muted while charging, and the buzzing becomes more noticeable. Some people say it’s loudest when the battery hits 100%. User victeeny said it’s been there since day one and gets more obvious as the charge level increases.
Apple’s engineering team allegedly knows about it now. One user claims they spent 30 minutes with a senior advisor who escalated the case. According to their updates, engineers have acknowledged the problem and are “working on a solution,” but there’s no word on when or how it’ll be fixed. Plus, there’s still no public acknowledgment. So take this with a grain of salt.
Over on Apple’s support forums, a similar discussion has 180+ people clicking “Me too.” Genius Bar employees who’ve looked at affected phones say diagnostics show everything’s working fine, which makes them think it could be software-related. But that hasn’t stopped the noise.
Both wired and MagSafe charging trigger the problem, though wireless charging produces a quieter version. User Electrox3d tested with Apple’s official cable and MagSafe puck and heard static with both methods.
People hoping the iOS 26.0.1 update would fix it were disappointed. The static’s still there. Even iOS 26.1 beta users report no improvement. One user, GUSTAV-Pkst, even shared a video recording for reference. Check it out below:
Beyond Reddit and Apple Discussions, there’s a big thread about the issue on MacRumors forums. Even a Facebook beta tester group lit up with reports of the same faint static from speakers or the port.
A few Genius Bar visits have happened with mixed results. Frost295 said the technician confirmed it’s “most likely a software problem” after checking all functions. But tiger19d went to an Apple Store where staff replicated the issue and escalated the ticket, though they had no units in stock for replacement.
For people approaching their 14-day return window, the decision is tough. Return a $1,400+ phone and wait for new stock? Or keep it and hope Apple pushes out a fix? User kcamfork said they were “offended” by hearing this kind of noise on a premium device and already moved their SIM back to their iPhone 15 Pro Max.
That said, this isn’t the only sound troubling users. Last week, we highlighted a problem where many iPhone 17 Pro Max users were reporting a clicking noise when using the camera. These issues, along with iOS 26’s buggy user experience, make it seem like Apple has lost its way lately.
