Instagram users are getting locked out of their accounts tonight as the platform’s two-factor authentication system appears to be experiencing widespread failures. Reports started flooding in a few hours ago, with people stuck on verification screens and unable to receive the codes they need to log in.

The problem isn’t just one thing going wrong. Some users are seeing an ‘SMS sent error’ message that reads “With an invalid phone number, we failed to send an SMS to you,” even after they’ve updated their phone numbers in settings.

Others are requesting password resets and receiving the codes just fine, but then getting hit with the same invalid number error right after logging in. A Reddit thread shows multiple people dealing with this exact situation, where the old number seems stuck somewhere in Instagram’s system despite being changed.

But it gets worse. Another group of users are trapped in what appears to be an endless authentication loop. One person described being on “step 25 of a seemingly infinite-step authentication process” in this Reddit post, cycling through email confirmations and phone verifications that go nowhere.

Multiple users report that only one of their accounts is affected, while their other Instagram accounts linked to the same Meta Account Center are working fine. This thread shows people experiencing the same selective lockout, with codes simply not arriving via SMS or email.

X is also lighting up with complaints. Users like @blunemone, @auliamitap, and @schaztc are all reporting similar problems, with some wondering if Instagram’s servers are down entirely.

One clue might be buried in the Reddit comments. A user mentioned receiving an email 16 days ago about being enrolled in Advanced Protection, which requires two-factor authentication setup within 16 days to avoid losing account access. That timeline would line up with today’s issues. But most affected users haven’t mentioned anything as such, meaning it could be totally unrelated.

Instagram hasn’t acknowledged the problem yet, so it’s unclear what exactly is going on and when the issue will be resolved. However, someone who did reach out to Meta Support had this to share:
