Update 10/09/25 – 11:20 am (IST): Proton has updated its status page to confirm that it is aware of the issue with its VPN services. The company says it’s investigating the issue. No ETA for a fix has been shared yet.
Original article follows:
Reports are popping up from users claiming Proton VPN is experiencing widespread issues and refusing to connect properly.
We spotted over 600 hits on Downdetector indicating an issue with Proton VPN. That’s not just a few isolated complaints – this points to a genuine infrastructure problem affecting a chunk of their user base.
Complaints are popping up on X as well:
What is going on with Proton VPN? It’s driving me nuts. (Source)

Other automated monitoring systems are also firing off alerts. @isdownapp sent out: “🚨 Users are reporting problems with Proton VPN” along with a link to check the service status.
The geographic spread of complaints suggests this isn’t just one server farm having a bad day. Users from different time zones are reporting similar connection failures, which typically means either central infrastructure problems or widespread network routing issues. But this is just speculation at best for now.
We haven’t spotted any official statement from Proton addressing the ongoing outage.
That said, we’ll keep a close eye on the situation and will update this article as and when there are any further developments. In the meantime, let us know if Proton VPN is working for you or not.
Developing….
