While there are still a few days left for Google to release the Pixel 10 series, early leaks and rumors are already causing a lot of chatter about the upcoming flagships, and not everything is positive. The recent leaks suggesting an eSIM-only approach for most models have sparked heated discussions among Android enthusiasts, while other rumors hint at welcome improvements like faster wireless charging. Then, we’re also getting attractive deals on current-gen devices.

Pixel users aren’t happy about potential eSIM-only move

The biggest controversy surrounding the Pixel 10 series centers on reports that Google might ditch physical SIM card slots for most models sold in the US. According to veteran leaker Evan Blass, the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL could go completely eSIM-only, offering two active eSIM slots instead of the traditional SIM tray.

Many users have taken to Reddit to question the move, citing concerns about carrier compatibility, travel convenience, and the general hassle of managing eSIMs. One user on Reddit commented: “This has to be US only like the latest fruit phones. Here in the UK not all networks support eSIM so eSIM-only phones would be unusable”.

Their guess is most likely correct. Even Evan Blass responded to a post asking if it’ll be limited to the US, stating, “Only data point so far is US, yes.”

The backlash isn’t entirely surprising given that eSIM adoption remains patchy across different regions and carriers. While the technology offers benefits like easier carrier switching and improved water resistance, many users prefer the simplicity and reliability of physical SIM cards, especially when traveling internationally.

Interestingly, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold appears to be exempt from this change and will reportedly retain its physical SIM tray alongside eSIM support.

Pixel 10 Pro Fold gets Qi2 boost

On a more positive note, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is set to receive a significant upgrade in wireless charging capabilities. Blass has confirmed that the upcoming foldable will be “Qi2-compliant,” which should translate to 15W wireless charging speeds.

This represents a major improvement over the current Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which maxes out at just 7.5W wirelessly. The doubling of charging speeds would make wireless charging a much more viable option for daily use, especially when paired with the rumored larger 5,015mAh battery.

However, there’s a catch. The Qi2 compliance doesn’t necessarily mean the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will have built-in magnets for MagSafe-style charging, as pointed out by Android Authority. Google will likely rely on its upcoming “Pixelsnap” cases and accessories to provide the magnetic functionality.

The timing is also worth mentioning; previous reports indicate the Pixel 10 Pro Fold won’t arrive until October 9, alongside the Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Buds 2a.

Massive discount on Pixel 9 Pro Fold ahead of successor’s debut

That said, for Pixel fans who don’t want to wait or drop top dollar on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, there’s some good news. Now might be the perfect time to snag the current-generation Pixel 9 Pro Fold at a heavily discounted price (h/t 9to5Google).

Amazon is currently offering the device for just $1,199, down from its original $1,799 price tag – that’s a substantial $600 discount and the lowest price ever seen for a new-condition unit.

This pricing makes the Pixel 9 Pro Fold significantly more affordable than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 and even the Fold 6, which still commands premium pricing despite being on the market for several months. Given that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is expected to bring incremental rather than revolutionary changes, the current-gen model at this price point becomes quite compelling.

Conclusion

With Google’s Made by Pixel event just around the corner, we’ll soon know which of these rumors prove accurate. The eSIM controversy will likely depend on Google’s final decision and how well the company communicates the benefits to users who remain skeptical about the technology. The Pixel 10 series launch promises to be one of Google’s most significant hardware events, especially with the introduction of the new Tensor G5 chipset.
