It’s been a whirlwind week for Google’s iconic smartphone lineup, with updates, recalls, and a sprinkle of legal drama making headlines. Grab your coffee (or tea, we don’t judge), and let’s dive into the latest from the world of Pixel.

Google Pixel 4a recall due to battery concerns

Google has initiated a recall for its Pixel 4a smartphones in Australia following reports of battery overheating, which poses potential fire and burn hazards. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) highlighted that an automatic firmware update to Android 13, rolled out on January 8, 2025, introduced new battery management features aimed at mitigating these risks. Users are advised to ensure their devices have received this update and to check their eligibility for refunds or replacements.

AI gets personal with Pixel Studio

Ever wished your Pixel could whip up a portrait of your dream dinner guest? Well, the latest update might just make that happen. Google’s March software drop introduces AI-generated images of people, a first for the Pixel lineup. While details are still unfolding, this move signals Google’s push to blend creativity with its AI prowess. According to Google, “all you have to do is type a description of a person or scene you’d like to see and watch as Pixel Studio brings your imagination to life.”

The Pixel Studio is currently available on Pixel 9 phones in English, Japanese, and German only.

DOJ reiterates call for Google to divest Chrome

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has reiterated its stance that Google should divest its Chrome browser to address concerns over its dominance in online search. This recommendation aims to create opportunities for new competitors to operate significant gateways to internet search, free from Google’s control. The DOJ’s updated proposal, filed ahead of an April hearing, also suggests that if certain measures do not enhance market competitiveness, Google could be compelled to sell its Android operating system.

From recalls to AI innovations, it’s clear Google’s keeping the Pixel train chugging along. Have thoughts on the recall, the new features, or the DOJ drama? Drop us a line — we love hearing from the Pixel faithful.
