Google has acknowledged a frustrating issue affecting some Pixel 7a users where their phones randomly reboot, particularly after the December feature drop update. Some users reported their devices restarting without warning while using apps or even overnight.
The problem, however, doesn’t seem to be universal. While looking into it, I found that only a relatively small group of users seem to be affected by the bug. I haven’t noticed the issue on a Pixel 7a unit that I use, while some others also confirmed that they couldn’t relate.
On the Google Issue Tracker, an update from Google’s team on February 4, 2025, marked the issue as “Fixed,” with a message stating, “We have a fix rolling out in an upcoming release.” This suggests that users should expect relief in the near future, likely with the next system update (maybe the Feb patch).
While waiting for the official fix, community advice has included running the device in safe mode to identify if third-party apps are the culprits, clearing cache, or even performing a factory reset as last resorts. However, these methods have shown mixed results, with some users still facing crashes and reboots even after trying these steps.
The issue seems to have parallels with complaints from over a year ago, though those might have been due to different causes. This recent wave of problems, however, appears directly linked to the latest software update, affecting a subset of users who should be relieved to know that a fix is on the way. There’s also a possibility that the update would address the problem on other Pixel phones that might be affected. So keep an eye out!
That said, random reboots have been a huge pain in the butt for Pixel users for a while now. You can give this article a read that goes over some potential solutions for the problem.
Feel free to let me know if you’ve been troubled by the bug on your Pixel 7a or any other Pixel phone for that matter.
