Android 15 QPR2 Beta 3 seems to have broken the “limit to 80%” battery charging feature on Pixel devices. Users on Reddit started reporting the issue right after installing the update, with many noticing their phones ignoring the 80% charging cap. This feature is supposed to stop charging once the battery reaches 80%, helping to preserve long-term battery health.

The problem seems widespread, affecting models like the Pixel 7, 8, and 9 series. One user said their Pixel 7 Pro continued to charge past 80% even though the feature was turned on. Another noted the same issue on a Pixel 8 Pro, adding that the lock screen still showed “Done Charging” even as the phone charged beyond the limit.

I tested this on a Pixel 8 and ran into the same problem immediately after the update was installed. The phone went past the 80% mark even though it said it was “done charging.” I took a screenshot for reference.

If you see, despite setting the 80% charge limit, the battery is charging past 80%. Google has previously explained that the phone may charge to 100% occasionally to recalibrate the battery’s estimated capacity. Some users believe this might explain the issue, but others disagree. They say the feature remains broken even after the recalibration process. One Redditor tested this theory by letting their phone charge to 100%, then draining the battery and trying again. They reported that the phone still bypassed the 80% limit afterward.

Not all users are affected, though. A few said the feature works fine on their devices running Beta 3. One commenter mentioned their Pixel 9 Pro stopped at 80% overnight, as expected. Another suggested that the update might trigger a forced full charge for calibration, after which the 80% limit resumes. However, this doesn’t seem to be consistent across devices.

For now, it’s unclear whether this is a bug or if the feature is working as intended. I’ve not been able to test it extensively yet to see if it works like it did before the update, however, I’ll share my findings via an update to the post shortly.
