Google is set to roll out an automatic software update for all Pixel 4a devices starting January 8, 2025. This update, still based on Android 13 (not surprising), aims to improve battery performance stability. However, for some users, it may lead to reduced battery capacity and slower charging times.

The update is part of the “battery performance programme” and introduces new battery management features designed to enhance stability. As a result, some users might notice their phones don’t last as long between charges. Charging performance could also decline, and the battery-level indicator might display differently. Despite these changes, Google assures users that they can continue using their Pixel 4a devices as usual.

Not all Pixel 4a units will experience these issues. To support those affected, Google is offering appeasement options. Eligible users can choose a free battery replacement, a $50 USD (or local equivalent) payment, or a $100 USD (or local equivalent) discount code for purchasing another Pixel phone from the Google Store. To determine eligibility, users can visit Google’s support page and enter their device’s IMEI number.

For those opting for a battery replacement, services are available at walk-in repair centers in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore, and India. Mail-in repair is also an option for U.S. customers. It’s advisable to contact the repair center in advance to ensure availability. Keep in mind that devices with other forms of damage, such as liquid exposure or screen cracks, may not qualify for a free battery replacement.

It’s worth noting that this “programme” doesn’t apply to any other Pixel devices, not even the Pixel 4a 5G. Users have until January 8, 2026, to register and select one of the appeasement options. After this date, the offers will no longer be available. So while you don’t need to hurry, we’d suggest spending a few minutes to verify stuff before you forget.

In short, while the upcoming update may lead to reduced battery performance for some Pixel 4a users, Google’s proactive approach to providing a solution to affected users provides a silver lining. If you own a Pixel 4a, do share your thoughts on this surprising initiative by Google.
