Google has finally addressed a frustrating bug that has been noticed by some Pixel Fold users. The issue, which caused the device to freeze completely when unfolded, left some users unable to interact with their phones. The outer screen worked fine, but the moment the Fold was opened, taps and swipes on the inner display stopped responding. This was a significant problem, especially for users who relied on the Fold’s larger screen for multitasking or media consumption.
The good news? A fix is now rolling out. But there’s a catch — it’s only available on the latest Android 15 QPR2 Beta 2 release. The fix, which Google confirmed on their issue tracker, specifically resolves the problem of the inner screen freezing. A Google team member marked the issue as “fixed” early on December 17, 2024.
Furthermore, the release notes from the latest A15 QPR2 Beta 2 also mention the following:
Fixed an issue that sometimes caused Pixel Fold devices to stop responding while unfolded.
While beta users can breathe a sigh of relief, those on the stable version of Android 15 might have to wait. Google hasn’t confirmed when this patch will make its way to the stable channel.
The issue tracker thread itself offers a glimpse into how long this bug lingered. The reports I could find started surfacing around the beginning of November, with users expressing their frustration over not being able to use their devices properly.
One user shared how their Pixel Fold suddenly stopped responding to touch inputs and even mentioned unrelated glitches like music playback issues. Another pleaded with Google to prioritize the fix, saying, “I usually have decent experiences being on beta testing… but not being able to use my fold like a tablet sucks.”
For now, if you’re running into this freezing issue and can’t wait, joining the Android beta program might be your best bet. Let’s just hope Google rolls out the fix to everyone sooner rather than later.
