Good news for those who have been beta testing Android 15. Following the release of the stable update to devices running Android 14, Google is now bringing the Android 15 stable build to Pixel devices on Android 15 Beta 4.2. After months of waiting, the wait is finally over for testers who chose to stick with the final beta instead of diving into the Quarterly Platform Release 1 (QPR1) beta.
Back in mid-August, Android 15 Beta 4.2 was introduced as the last beta before the Android 15 QPR1 updates began. Packed with the August 2024 security patch, this beta was later expanded to the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL, giving users a glimpse of the final product.
For those not ready to take on the quarterly updates, Google’s instructions were clear: opt out of the Android Beta Program and steer clear of the downgrade to Android 14. However, this meant enduring a two-month wait without any new updates for the patient bunch. Well, the patience has paid off, and the stable update is finally here.
Pixel users on Beta 4.2 are now receiving an OTA (over-the-air) update that clocks in at just around 200MB. If you’re doing a quick comparison, that’s a far cry from the hefty 1GB-plus update that Android 14 users experienced.
But, not everything in Beta 4.2 made it into the stable release. Some features, like Device diagnostics and Adaptive timeout, have been removed from the final build, leaving users without a few handy tools they might have grown fond of during testing.
Meanwhile, Android 15 QPR1 remains in beta. Since the Beta 2 release in September, Google has yet to address several pesky bugs, like issues with screenshots not capturing, missing lockscreen shortcuts, and apps not closing on the lockscreen. As we approach December’s official QPR1 launch, we can expect another update (possibly Beta 2.1 or Beta 3) to address these lingering issues.
For now, if you’ve been holding onto Beta 4.2, it’s time to hit that update button and enjoy the final stable version of Android 15.
