Google has confirmed (via 9to5Google) that its advanced AI assistant, Gemini, will soon be available on older Pixel Buds models, bringing cutting-edge AI capabilities to a wider range of users. This move comes as Google continues to expand Gemini’s reach across its ecosystem of devices and services.

The rollout will include all previous Pixel Buds models, including the Pixel Buds A-series. Users will be able to access Gemini through their earbuds as long as it’s set as the default assistant on their paired Android phone and they’re in a country where Gemini is available.

While Google hasn’t provided a specific timeline for the update, the company’s wording suggests it will happen in the near future. This expansion will allow more users to experience Gemini’s advanced features without needing to upgrade to the latest Pixel Buds Pro 2, which already includes Gemini integration.

However, Google notes that some features may work differently with Gemini compared to the previous Google Assistant. For instance, users will need to unlock their paired Android phone first to use Gemini with their Pixel Buds. After this initial unlock, personalized responses will continue even if the phone locks again. Users can adjust this behavior through the Pixel Buds app settings.

Another significant change involves the “Hey Google” voice activation. Google has announced that this feature will now be linked to the paired phone’s settings, rather than having a separate toggle for the earbuds. This means if “Hey Google” detection is disabled on the phone, it won’t work on the Pixel Buds either.

While the exact release date for Gemini on older Pixel Buds remains unclear, Google’s announcement has generated excitement among users eager to try out the new AI assistant on their existing earbuds. As always, the rollout may be gradual, so users should keep an eye out for updates in the coming weeks.
