If you’ve been tinkering with your new Pixel 9 and decided to unlock the bootloader, you might have noticed some of the snazzy AI features, like Pixel Screenshots and Call Notes, suddenly ghosting you. Turns out, Google’s AICore isn’t too fond of unlocked bootloaders, refusing to download the crucial Gemini Nano model that powers these features. But fear not, some crafty users have found a way to make these AI tools work again on unlocked devices — just be aware that you’re venturing into uncharted territory here.

According to Android expert Mishaal Rahman, the root of the issue seems to be the Private Compute Services (PCS) app, which uses a secure download process to verify your device before letting you in on the AI action. PCS recently introduced a new layer of security with Key Attestation, making sure your device is legit before allowing the download. Unfortunately, this security check doesn’t play nice with unlocked bootloaders, which is why your AI features have gone dark.

But where there’s a will, there’s a way. Thanks to some community sleuthing, there’s now a method to trick PCS into thinking your device is still locked, allowing you to bypass the restrictions and get those AI features up and running again. The process involves using a few tools like Tricky Store, Play Integrity Fix, and Zygisk Assistant. Once you’ve got these installed and configured, you’ll need to clear some app data and reboot, and voilà — your Pixel 9 should be back to its AI-powered self.

Before you get too excited, remember this workaround is a bit of a hack. It’s not guaranteed to work for everyone, and Google might shut down this method sooner rather than later. Plus, if something goes sideways, you’re on your own — there’s no customer support hotline for unofficial mods like this.

For those brave enough to try, the rewards are there: full access to Pixel Screenshots, Call Notes, and other Gemini Nano-powered features, even with an unlocked bootloader. Just keep in mind that Google’s security measures exist for a reason, and bypassing them could have unforeseen consequences.

So, if you’re feeling adventurous and don’t mind the risk, go ahead and give this workaround a shot. But if you’re more cautious, it might be worth waiting for a more official solution — or simply keeping that bootloader locked tight.
