Google’s Pixel phones are famous for having second homes on the internet months before they’re officially released. This year, it seems regulators decided to join the party and spill the beans (or, should we say, pixels) all over the web.

Normally, new phone details leak out in bits and pieces, like a leaky faucet. But this year, thanks to the folks at the Taiwanese National Communications Commission (NCC) and first reported by Android Authority, we’ve got a whole gushing geyser of information about the upcoming Pixel 9 series.

Here’s the juicy stuff: Google is expected to unveil four Pixel 9 phones at an event on August 13. There’s a standard Pixel 9, a “small Pro” Pixel 9 Pro (which is actually the same size as the regular 9 but with extra features), a big boy Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold aka Pixel Fold 2, Google’s second attempt at a foldable phone.

The NCC filings have given us a sneak peek at everything from battery sizes to camera setups, and even a bit of what’s under the hood.

The Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro share the same footprint but diverge in camera and internal specs. The Pro model boasts three rear cameras and some beefed-up features likely geared towards AI applications. Earlier leaks suggest the Pro might pack up to 16GB of RAM, essential for some of Google’s advanced AI functions.

When it comes to battery life, the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro are both getting a 4,558 mAh battery, slightly more juice than the Pixel 8. Meanwhile, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is fitted with a 4,942 mAh battery. Charging speeds see a modest improvement, with the Pro XL model now supporting nearly 33W charging, up from about 30W in the Pixel 8 Pro.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is where things get particularly interesting. It’s taller and more rectangular compared to last year’s model, aligning more closely with its competitors. The camera layout has shifted to a square grid, and the selfie camera on the inner display now resides in the corner. Notably, this new Fold can lay completely flat, a significant improvement over its predecessor.

Despite these design tweaks, the Fold’s battery has been slightly reduced to 4,560 mAh from 4,727 mAh. This change reflects the ongoing challenge of balancing battery life with the power demands of a large OLED screen.

All four Pixel 9 models are equipped with Thread radio, and all except the base model feature ultra-wideband (UWB) support. Plus, Google is introducing a new, sleek 45W charger to keep these devices powered up efficiently.

Mark your calendars for August 13, when the Made by Google event will officially unveil the Pixel 9 series. Whether you’re excited about the standard model, the Pro, the XL, or the new Fold, there’s plenty to look forward to.

So, there you have it. Thanks to some overzealous regulators, we now know pretty much everything about the Google Pixel 9 series before Google even has a chance to announce it. Stay tuned for the latest updates as we countdown to the release of Google’s next-generation Pixel phones.
