Google is expanding the reach of Ultra HDR, its innovative image format for capturing true HDR photos, to third-party apps. This means that even if you’re not using the default camera app on your Pixel 8 or Pixel 7 series device, you’ll soon be able to capture stunning HDR images with your favorite social media or photography apps.

Ultra HDR is a JPEG-based format that stores both SDR and HDR versions of an image within a single file. This allows for broader compatibility, ensuring that your photos can be viewed on virtually any device, regardless of its HDR capabilities. However, on HDR-enabled devices like the Pixel 8, Ultra HDR images truly shine, revealing more vibrant and contrasty colors compared to standard SDR images.

Previously, Ultra HDR capture was limited to apps using the Camera2 API, primarily full-fledged camera apps with advanced controls. But according to a report by Android Authority’s Mishaal Rahman, with the upcoming update to Google’s CameraX library, version 1.4.0, Ultra HDR photography will become accessible to apps that rely on the simpler CameraX API, such as social media apps with built-in camera functionality.

This expansion is made possible by introducing new APIs in CameraX that enable apps to query device capabilities and capture Ultra HDR images in the JPEG/R format. Google Chrome already fully supports Ultra HDR across Android and desktop, while other compatible devices besides the Pixel 7 and 8 include the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, OnePlus 12 and Open and select Windows PCs with HDR displays.

To experience the benefits of Ultra HDR firsthand, Mishaal encourages you to view some Ultra HDR photos captured with the OnePlus Open. These images showcase the superior dynamic range and color accuracy that Ultra HDR can achieve.

While some third-party apps already support Ultra HDR, the update to CameraX 1.4.0 should pave the way for broader adoption. Soon, you’ll be able to capture stunning Ultra HDR photos directly from your favorite apps, opening up a world of creative possibilities for mobile photography.
