After a long wait, it appears that Google Messages users in India are finally getting the ability to chat with Gemini. While Gemini in Google Messages has been available in many parts of the world since earlier this year, for some reason, Google hadn’t released the feature in India. The official Google Messages support page still doesn’t list India as one of the supported countries. Here’s a partial screenshot of the list of countries:

However, there are signs that Google is finally rolling out the feature to Indian users. One of our Pixel devices, specifically the Pixel 8, picked up Gemini in Google Messages yesterday. The functionality appeared on the beta version of the Messages app – v20240610_04_RC00.

Here are a few screenshots for reference:

While there aren’t many reports from users confirming the same, I did spot one post from a user on X who also claims that they received Gemini in Google Messages on their Vivo X80 handset in India.

With Gemini integration, users can chat with the AI assistant to draft messages, brainstorm ideas, plan events, or simply have a conversation. Gemini can also help users write difficult messages, sound like an expert in their writing, plan a game night, and much more.

It is not yet clear why Google held back the release of Gemini in Messages for Indian users, or why the official support page has not yet been updated. However, based on these new developments, it appears that the feature is finally making its way to Android users in India. It may take days or even weeks for a wider release, so hang in there!
