Rivian will let you use your Google Pixel phone as a key for ‘next-gen’ EVs

In a move that blends convenience with cutting-edge technology, Rivian has announced that owners of its upcoming “next-gen” electric vehicles will be able to use their Google Pixel phones as digital car keys. This feature, part of a broader refresh of the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, marks a significant step towards a keyless future for Rivian owners.

The electric automaker revealed that “select” Google Pixel devices will have the ability to unlock and start Rivian vehicles seamlessly. While Rivian hasn’t specified which Pixel models will be supported, it’s likely that the feature will rely on Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, which is present in newer Pixel phones.

This isn’t just a Pixel-exclusive feature, though. Rivian is also extending this functionality to Apple users, allowing them to store their car keys in Apple Wallet on iPhones and Apple Watches. The beauty of these digital keys is that they can be easily shared with family and friends, adding a layer of flexibility to vehicle access.

Rivian plans to roll out this keyless entry feature later this summer, promising more details closer to the launch. It’s still unclear whether existing Rivian vehicles will receive this update, but the possibility remains open.
