Google is extending its commitment to longevity by offering seven years of OS updates for the Pixel 8a. “For the first time ever, we’re offering seven years of OS updates on the A-series devices,” Soniya stated, highlighting the significance of this move for users who prefer to keep their devices for longer periods.
In addition to longevity, the Pixel 8a prioritizes user safety with features like crisis alert, car crash detection, and safety check. Safety check allows users to set a check-in timer and automatically shares their location with selected contacts if they don’t respond, providing an added layer of security. Soniya emphasized that “we’re trying to keep your whole person safe, not just your data.”
Sustainability is another key focus for Google, and the Pixel 8a reflects this commitment. The device incorporates recycled materials, including the “most sustainable back cover yet,” according to Soniya. The back cover contains 24% recycled content based on product weight, making it the most environmentally friendly option in the A-series lineup. Additionally, the Pixel 8a comes in 100% plastic-free packaging, demonstrating Google’s dedication to reducing environmental impact. Soniya emphasized the challenges of incorporating these sustainable practices into an affordable device, stating, “to do it on an affordable device is really challenging.”
Sleek design and powerful performance
The Pixel 8a boasts a refined design with rounded edges, a matte back cover, and a polished aluminum frame. It comes in four new colors: aloe, bay, obsidian, and porcelain. The device shares a similar size with the Pixel 8, catering to users’ preferences for a compact yet functional form factor.
Under the hood, the Pixel 8a is powered by Google’s Tensor G3 chip, the same processor found in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. This powerful chip enables the device to deliver impressive performance and efficiently run AI-powered features.

Features like Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and Night Sight utilize AI algorithms to improve image quality and versatility. Additionally, the device introduces Audio Magic Eraser for removing unwanted background noise from videos and expands Real Tone technology to videos for accurate and equitable representation.
The Pixel 8a also supports Gemini Nano as a developer option, allowing users to access premium generative AI features like Recorder Summarize and Smart Reply.
