A recent teardown video from PBKreviews examines the repairability of the newly released Google Pixel 8a smartphone. While Google promises software support until the early 2030s, the phone received only an average repairability score of 7.5 out of 10 in this disassembly analysis.
The teardown begins by highlighting some positive repairability aspects. The plastic back cover can be easily removed by applying heat and prying it off. Notably, the camera lens cover can be replaced separately without fully disassembling the phone. Standard Torx screws are used throughout for easy removal.
However, one major drawback was encountered with the battery removal process. Despite a dedicated pull tab, the battery adhesive proved extremely stubborn, requiring ample isopropyl alcohol to weaken the glue for prying off the battery safely. This sticky battery installation seems to be a recurring issue with Pixel phones.
Inside, the cooling system for the new Tensor G3 chip utilizes graphite film, copper tape, and thermal pads rather than a vapor chamber design. This more basic cooling setup may contribute to the chip’s tendency to run warm, as noted in recent reviews.
On the upside, replacing the display only requires heating the front glass to access the display cable, avoiding full disassembly. The charging port is soldered to the main board though, which could hinder easy port replacement.
Overall, while the Pixel 8a follows a traditional smartphone design allowing many components to be replaced through standard prying and reconnecting cables, the stubbornly adhered battery docked points from the repairability score. Careful prying and ample solvents are recommended for any battery swap on this model.
