Google is rolling out a handy new feature with Android 15 that will keep your profile picture synced across Google services and your Pixel phone. The latest Android beta introduces a new “Google Pixel Avatar App” that allows users to easily set their Google account profile picture as their Android avatar.
The new Avatar Picker app replaces the previous profile picture selector that was integrated into the Settings app. While the core functionality remains the same, allowing you to take a new photo, choose an existing one from your gallery, or select from pre-made avatars, there’s now a dedicated option to simply use your current Google account picture.
A key benefit of this new approach is improved syncing between your Google account and Android’s profile picture. In previous versions of Android, changing your account photo didn’t always immediately reflect those changes system-wide on your phone. The new Avatar Picker automatically updates your profile picture everywhere – in the status bar, user switcher, and throughout Android’s interface whenever you update your Google account image.
Android Authority highlights that currently, this new Avatar Picker experience seems to be exclusive to Pixel phones running Android 15, owing to its Google Pixel Avatar Picker name. It’s also limited to sharing your selected profile photo solely with the Settings and System UI apps due to privacy restrictions, so third-party apps cannot access it.
Overall, it’s a small but appreciated addition that streamlines using the same personal profile picture across Google’s services and your Android device. The tight integration makes switching your avatar a seamless experience on Pixel phones with Android 15.
