Setting up a new Android phone just got a bit less tedious, thanks to a recent update on the Google Play Store. As reported by 9to5Google and Android Police, the Play Store now allows users to download two apps concurrently. This function comes after years of waiting and whispers of development, but it’s far from the finished product we all want so bad.

Imagine the frustration of waiting for each app to download one by one, especially when transferring dozens of apps to a new device. Thankfully, this wait time is being slashed significantly with a new Google Play Store update. While not exactly earth-shattering, this small change is a welcome improvement. To experience it, simply try downloading two large apps like Google Docs and Sheets. You’ll witness them gloriously downloading and installing at the same time, a sight previously unimaginable on the Play Store.

It’s important to note that this functionality is still in its early stages. For now, only two concurrent downloads are allowed, with additional apps placed in a pending queue. Additionally, the feature is limited to new app installations, and doesn’t apply to app updates (which many would argue is the more pressing need).

However, there’s hope on the horizon. Google seems to be taking things step-by-step, and with the groundwork laid, it’s likely that multiple app update downloads and a higher download limit are on the way. So, while the champagne showers might have to wait, this is definitely a step in the right direction for a smoother Android experience.

The change is rolling out to Pixel devices running Android 14 and version 40.6.31 of the Google Play Store, although it’s been spotted on non-Pixel devices too, like Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. However, none of our devices has picked up the new feature, which makes us believe it’s rolling out gradually.
