Google Pay users in the US have begun receiving an expected email reminder that the standalone app will officially shut down on June 4, 2024. This marks another chapter in Google’s history of axing and consolidating its services, a pattern that has often left users frustrated and scrambling for alternatives.

With the shutdown date looming, Google Pay users in the US need to know that sending and receiving money directly within Google Pay will no longer be possible. The Google Pay app will become completely unavailable for use on June 4. However, if you have a remaining Google Pay balance, you’ll still be able to access and manage it through the Google Pay website after the app shuts down. Additionally, Google is making changes and limitations on withdrawals, balance limits, and the process of adding funds for users with a Google Pay balance.

Google is pushing users toward Google Wallet as the replacement for core Google Pay functionalities like tap-to-pay, managing payment methods, and peer-to-peer payments. This transition should be relatively smooth for user who relied on Google Pay for these features.

Sadly, Google Pay isn’t the first Google app to shut down. The tech giant has a long track record of discontinuing popular apps and services. Remember Google+, Google Hangouts, or the ill-fated Google Podcasts? These abrupt shutdowns often leave users searching for viable alternatives and feeling less than confident about Google’s long-term service dedication.

Google Pay users with funds in their accounts should take action before the June 4 deadline to transfer their balance to their bank accounts. Even though the Google app landscape is constantly shifting, hopefully this will be the last time we see a Google Wallet rebrand.
