Google appears to be rolling out an early surprise for some Pixel phone users – the April 2024 Google Play system update. Typically, these updates arrive towards the end of the month, but reports are surfacing of the update hitting devices like the Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro.
The update weighs in at around 75MB, but its purpose remains shrouded in mystery. Google’s official release notes page has yet to be updated, leaving us with speculations of what changes and improvements might be included. Notably, the March 2024 Play system update arrived two weeks ago but Google hasn’t updated the release notes page with the changelog.
So far, not all Pixel owners are seeing the April update just yet. As is common with Google’s updates, it appears to be rolling out in a staggered fashion, which explains why all of our Pixel devices are still on last month’s version. Interestingly, our Pixel 8 picked up a small 11MB update but still remained on the March update, so if you haven’t received a notification, keep checking over the coming days.
To manually check for the April 2024 Google Play system update, head to your Pixel’s Settings > Security & Privacy > System & Updates > Google Play system update.
We’ll keep an eye on Google’s support pages for an official changelog outlining the contents of this unexpected early April update. Stay tuned for more information.
