Google has been quietly chipping away at a revamped desktop mode for what seems like ages. Historically, Android on a big screen has felt more like a stretched-out phone interface – functional, but not really elegant. Samsung has been the king of the Android desktop hill for a while. Dex delivers a smooth experience and actually can replace your desktop for some tasks. I owned the Galaxy S9 which offered DeX support and I used it extensively. Later, I took full advantage of DeX on the Galaxy Tab S7, even ditching my laptop for a period of time. But now that I’ve switched over to Team Pixel, it’s the only thing I miss.

Something tells me Google might just have a few tricks up its sleeve. We already know Pixels offer that clean, stock Android feel, uncluttered by unnecessary bloatware. Imagine that purity extended to your desktop – no extra launchers to deal with, maybe deeper integration with core Google services. It’s also worth noting that Google enabled display output on the Pixel 8 with a recent beta.

The potential to use Google’s AI prowess within a desktop mode on Android 15 is also tantalizing. Smart organization tools, seamless connection between your phone and your desktop workspace – that’s where Google could really shine.

It may still be a little early to pop the champagne—Android 15’s desktop mode probably won’t be perfect from the start.
