For years, Apple has held the crown when it comes to long-term software updates, with iPhones enjoying at least 6 years of iOS upgrades. But the Android landscape is shifting. Google’s Pixel 8 threw down the gauntlet by promising 7 years of OS and security updates, swiftly followed by Samsung matching that duration for its Galaxy S24 lineup. Now, it seems Sony may be ready to join the long-term support game.

Rumors swirling around the tech world suggest Sony is planning a significant change for its Xperia devices. Speculation is that starting with the Xperia 1 VI, Xperia 5 VI, and even the Xperia 10 VI, Sony might move to a generous 5 years of software support. This would be a seismic shift from their usual 2 OS updates policy that has lagged behind the competition.

It’s important to note that the rumors don’t clarify whether this means 5 full OS upgrades. It’s possible Sony might intend a lower number of OS updates for its less premium devices, though this is pure speculation at this point.

Still, shifting to 5 years of software support could potentially put Sony Xperia devices on a more even footing with Google, Samsung, and other top Android players. It’s a welcome change for consumers who want their investment in a Sony smartphone to last longer. But for now, let’s keep an eye out for official confirmation for this could be a game-changer if the rumors prove true.

Sony hasn’t revealed when the Xperia 1 VI, Xperia 5 VI and Xperia 10 VI will be unveiled. But with such details starting to float around, chances are the phones will be unveiled in the coming weeks or perhaps a couple of months.
