The Google Pixel 8 Pro faired surprisingly well in an extreme display brightness test when pit against the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and OnePlus 12. The video by TechDroider chronicles how these phones handle prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, specifically their ability to maintain maximum brightness.

Initially, the Samsung S24 Ultra boasts the brightest display, but this reign is short-lived. After 5 minutes, the OnePlus 12 snatches the crown. Following it is the S24U, then the 15 Pro Max and at last, the Pixel 8 Pro. At this point, TechDroider pulls up the temperature of the devices as well. The iPhone 15 Pro Max sits at 47.9°C, the Galaxy S24 Ultra at 45.4°C, the OnePlus 12 at 47.8°C and the Pixel 8 Pro at 47.3°C.

Around the 6-7 minutes into the experiment, the results become quite interesting. Samsung’s shiny new flagship drops to the last spot. The OnePlus 12 remains the brightest, followed by the Pixel 8 Pro and then the 15 Pro Max.

Then, in another twist, the iPhone drops to the last place, the Galaxy falls third in the line, the Pixel 8 Pro second, and finally the OnePlus 12, which surprisingly is way brighter than the competition.

By the 13-minute mark, all phones except the OnePlus 12 become difficult to use due to significantly reduced screen visibility. The individual notes that the phones became quite laggy at this point as well.

Even at the 20-minute mark, the OnePlus 12 maintains its impressive brightness level, with the Pixel 8 Pro coming in second. The iPhone 15 Pro Max claims the third spot while Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra becomes the dimmest of them all.

The temperatures at the end of the test were as follows:

  • iPhone 15 Pro Max: 50.4°C
  • Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra: 52.5°C
  • OnePlus 12: 54°C
  • Google Pixel 8 Pro: 50.4°C

So it seems the OnePlus achieved its win by compromising on heat management. The S24 Ultra got hotter than the Pixel and iPhone, but still lost in this experiment. I’m surprised by the results of the Pixel 8 Pro in this challenging display brightness test. I went into this expecting the Pixel 8 Pro to either be the dimmest or get the hottest. I’m glad I was proven wrong. The Pixel managed to balance the brightness and temperature excellently. So kudos to Google! You can check out the video below:
