Earlier this year, we highlighted how the Pixel 8 Pro’s battery life was put to shame when compared to the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Now, in another interesting battery comparison by The Tech Chap (Tom), Google’s flagship wasn’t able to deliver. The Tech Chap is one of the most popular technology YouTubers in the UK and shares battery drain comparisons a couple of times a year.

In his latest video, Tom pitted the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Galaxy S24 Ultra, Honor Magic 6 Pro, Pixel 8 Pro, Xiaomi 14 Ultra, OnePlus 12, Zenfone 11 Ultra, Vivo X100 Pro, and OPPO X7 Ultra agaist each other for an epic battery drain test. Apart from the Pixel 8 Pro, Vivo X100 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, all other devices launched this year. So one might add that it’s not really a fair comparison since technically, it should be the Google Pixel 9 Pro that should go up against these shiny new flagships. But either way, the Pixel 8 Pro was the first smartphone to throw in the towel.

Tom ran various apps such as YouTube, Instagram, Camera, and even games to drain the battery on the phones. While it initially seems like the Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra was going to tap out the first, it managed to hold on to some juice while the Pixel 8 Pro dropped out of the race at 9 hours 15 minutes. To cut things short, I’ve added a table below for the battery results.

Device Battery capacity (mAh) Battery drained after
Pixel 8 Pro 5050 9 hours 15 minutes
Oppo Find X7 Ultra 5000 10 hours 20 minutes
Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra 5500 10 hours 21 minutes
Xiaomi 14 Ultra 5000 10 hours 23 minutes
OnePlus 12 5400 11 hours
Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra 5000 11 hours 05 minutes
Honor Magic 6 Pro 5600 11 hours 31 minutes
Vivo X100 Pro 5400 12 hours 46 minutes

As Tom rightfully pointed out, the Pixel 8 Pro went under first even though it packs the least powerful SoC amongst the competition. Moreover, there’s a whole 3 hours and 31 minutes difference between the Pixel 8 Pro and the Vivo X100 Pro. Of course, the Vivo X100 Pro has a bigger battery, but one must also note that the Galaxy S24 Ultra with a 50mAh smaller battery capacity also outlasted the Pixel 8 Pro by a whole hour and 50 minutes.

This just goes to show that the company has a lot of work cut out for the upcoming Pixel 9 Pro and even the Pixel 10 series and beyond. While there’re no credible rumors about the battery capacity on the Pixel 9 Pro, it’s likely to remain the same or at least have a small bump. Hopefully, a bump in battery capacity combined with a more efficient Tensor G4 SoC would help bring the battery life on Google Pixel 9 Pro in line with that of 2024 flagships.

Matter of fact, the situation for those affected with battery drain issues is even worse. So unless Google figures out how to optimize the battery life on its Pixel phones, we sadly won’t see a Pixel win these comparisons anytime soon. That said, what are your experiences with the battery life on the Pixel 8 Pro? Do you think it’s sufficient or do you wish to see bigger battery gains with the upcoming Pixel 9 Pro?
