Owners of the first-generation Pixel Watch are in for a treat. Google’s March Pixel Feature Drop brings a suite of new features that were previously exclusive to the Pixel Watch 2, significantly boosting its workout tracking capabilities.

Here’s the rundown of the key additions:

Automatic workout detection

The incoming March Pixel Feature Drop is here to help you automate your workouts on the 1st-gen Pixel Watch. You no longer have to manually start and stop your runs. Similar to its successor, the Pixel Watch now offers auto-start and auto-stop functionality for a seamless workout experience. It intelligently detects activity like running, walking, elliptical, spinning, outdoor biking, treadmill, and rowing, eliminating any pre- or post-workout fumbling. However, it’s worth noting that for treadmill workouts, only auto-start works.

Pace training

Runners now have a powerful new tool to fine-tune their training. Pace training lets you set a target for your runs and walks. Using the watch’s GPS and motion sensors, it keeps you in the zone, providing haptic feedback and voice cues (when paired with Pixel Buds Pro) if you drift outside your desired pace.

Heart zone training

Going forward, you can now get the most out of your workouts with personalized heart zone training. The first-gen Pixel Watch now calculates time spent in different heart rate zones, customized to your fitness levels. You can set targets and receive haptic notifications and voice alerts as you change zones, giving you vital real-time insights into your workout intensity.

Enhanced workout tracking

The workout interface gets a revamp, with larger text and brighter colors for improved visibility. Stats like pace and heart rate are now easier to glance at, helping you focus on performance.

The March Pixel Feature Drop bridges the feature gap between the first-generation Pixel Watch and its successor. By bringing new features to the 1st-gen model, this update demonstrates Google’s continued commitment to improving its wearables and makes the original Pixel Watch a far more compelling fitness companion.
