Get ready to personalize your messaging experience even further with custom RCS chat colors in Google Messages. The feature was first announced back in December and can finally be enabled if you’re brave enough to mess with feature flags. The latest development was spotted by TheSpAndroid, who confirmed that they were able to set custom colors in an RCS chat for both parties with flags in the latest beta.

While not a kaleidoscope of endless possibilities just yet, the current beta offers 9 vibrant hues to choose from, letting you ditch the default blue and paint your conversations in shades that match your mood, personality, or even the topic at hand. Imagine fiery orange for a group chat with friends, calming green for a nature-loving pen pal, or playful purple for a lighthearted family thread.

But custom colors aren’t just for solo enjoyment. The magic lies in synchronization. When you pick a color, the other person in the conversation (provided they’re also on RCS and have the feature enabled) gets notified and can choose their own shade to create a truly unique shared palette.

While there’s no official word on the wider rollout yet, eagle-eyed beta testers like the folks at TheSpAndroid have managed to unlock the feature using flags in the latest beta update (messages.android_20240125_01_RCO0.phone.openbeta_dynamic). So, if you’re a beta tester and feeling adventurous, you might be able to get a head start on coloring your conversations.

But the excitement doesn’t end with chat colors. Google’s been busy brewing other goodies for your messaging experience. You’ll even be able to set custom backgrounds for RCS chats and edit messages.

With custom chat colors, message editing, and more, Google Messages is shaping up to be a haven for personalized and expressive communication. So, keep your eyes peeled for the official rollout of these features and get ready to paint your chats with a vibrant splash of creativity!
