Update 1 (January 24, 2023)
02:30 pm (IST): Google has reportedly halted the rollout of the Play System update for January following the reports of issues with accessing storage on the device.
Original story published on January 17, 2024 follows…
Some Pixel and other Android users have begun receiving the latest January 2024 Google Play System Update on their devices. Google Play System Updates are one of the ways that Google delivers security and privacy improvements to Android devices. These updates are separate from the monthly security patches and the major Android version updates.
As per some users, the size of the January update is really small, around 2.4MB. This suggests that it does not contain any major changes or fixes. Although these updates are released every month, Google skipped the December 2023 Google Play System Update for some reason. And the company has now jumped directly to the January 2024 version.
However, some Android users have been facing issues with receiving the latest Google Play System update. According to reports, some Pixel and other Android users are still stuck on the November 2023 Play System Update, even after trying to update to the latest version.
As a matter of fact, we have also experienced this issue on our Pixel 7a unit. We received the January 2024 Google Play System Update, which was a 2.4MB download. However, after installing it and rebooting the device, the Google Play System Update section in the settings still showed that the device was on the November 2023 version.
We hope that Google will fix this issue soon and provide more clarity on the status of the Google Play System Update for Pixel and other Android users. It’s worth noting some users also encountered difficulties while installing the November 2023 Google Play System Update.
