While unveiling the Pixel 8 series, Google made a significant commitment to users by announcing seven-year update support for the phones. This extended support covers operating system updates, security patches, and feature drops. The company also addressed the longevity of the hardware by confirming that repair parts for the Pixel 8 series will be available for purchase for seven years. Now, adding to the Diagnostic app and repair manual released this month, Google has now furnished iFixit with Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro repair parts.

This should come as good news for Pixel 8 and 8 Pro owners who are handy with a screwdriver. As promised, Google has teamed up with iFixit to make essential repair parts readily available, encouraging users to fix their phones instead of replacing them. This move not only extends the lifespan of these sleek devices but also promotes sustainable practices in the tech industry. Whether you’ve cracked your screen, need a fresh battery, or want to replace a faulty camera, iFixit has you covered.

Here’s a peek at the key parts available on iFixit for the standard Pixel 8 and their prices compared to the Pixel 7:

Part/Device Name Pixel 7 Pixel 8 Price difference
Screen $139.99 $159.99 $20
Battery $42.99 $42.99 $0
Wide rear camera $89.99 $142.99 $53
Ultra-wide rear camera $42.99 $62.99 $20
Front camera $42.99
Rear panel $142.99

The screen is the most expensive part to replace on the Pixel 8, priced at $159.99. But it’s only a $20 increase from last year. The part to see the biggest price hike is the main 50MP camera module on the back of the phone, which will now cost $142.99, up from $89.99. This represents a massive 58.90% price increase, which goes to show just how expensive replacing the main camera on the Pixel 8 will be compared to the Pixel 7.

Other Pixel 8 parts listed on iFixit include the front camera adhesive used to secure the module to the frame ($1.99), the logic board’s thermal conductive pad ($1.99), adhesive shim ($1.99), graphite sheet that covers the lower part of the battery and motherboard ($1.99), and screen adhesive ($3.99).

For Pixel 8 Pro owners, the repair bill will be slightly higher for obvious reasons. The premium triple-camera system is sold as a single unit for $199.99 and even though higher than the standard Pixel 8, it represents a slightly lower $47 increment from last year’s Pixel 7 Pro camera pricing. But as expected, Google’s switch to Super Actua technology for the Pixel 8 Pro’s screen makes it the most expensive part priced at $229.99. However, the screen replacement cost remains relatively stable compared to the 7 Pro’s $212.99, with no changes in the battery department.

Here’s a peek at the key repair parts available on iFixit for the Pixel 8 Pro and their prices compared to the Pixel 7 Pro:

Part/Device Name Pixel 7 Pro Pixel 8 Pro Price difference
Screen $212.99 $229.99 $17
Battery $42.99 $42.99 $0
Rear camera $152.99 $199.99 $47
Front camera $42.99
Rear panel $172.99

Other Pixel 8 Pro parts listed on iFixit include the front camera adhesive used to secure the module to the frame ($1.99), the logic board’s thermal conductive pad ($1.99), 5G mmWave adhesive and thermal pad ($2.99), adhesive shim ($1.99), graphite sheet that covers the lower part of the battery and motherboard ($3.99), and screen adhesive ($3.99).

Going forward, Pixel 8 and 8 Pro users with the know-how won’t have to be forced into shipping their phones to a technician for repair. Cracked screen in year one? No problem, order a replacement and enjoy that stunning display once again. Battery struggling in year four? Give it a boost with a fresh power cell and rediscover that all-day battery life. Camera module feeling shy in year five? Swap it out and capture your memories with renewed clarity.

Despite the higher cost of some repair parts compared to last year, this commitment to repairability is still good for your wallet and the planet too. Fewer discarded phones mean less electronic waste, making your Pixel love affair even more eco-friendly. With 7 years of parts by your side, your Pixel 8 adventure is just getting started!
